Book Review: The Traitors Game by Jennifer A. Nielsen

The Traitors Game

by Jennifer A. Nielsen

Rating: 4/5 stars

Summary: Nothing is as it seems in the kingdom of Antora. Kestra Dallisor has spent three years in exile in the Lava Fields, but that won't stop her from being drawn back into her father's palace politics. He's the right hand man of the cruel king, Lord Endrick, which makes Kestra a valuable bargaining chip. A group of rebels knows this all too well - and they snatch Kestra from her carriage as she reluctantly travels home. The kidnappers want her to retrieve the lost Olden Blade, the only object that can destroy the immortal king, but Kestra is not the obedient captive they expected. Simon, one of her kidnappers, will have his hands full as Kestra tries to foil their plot, by force, cunning, or any means necessary. As motives shift and secrets emerge, both will have to decide what - and who - it is they're fighting for.

My Review:

Omg this book was a bunch of SPICEY enchiladas all rolled up into one. Straight fire. Undeniable heat. Spicy, spicy, spice.

Like seriously ya’ll.... the plot twists.... *mouth drops open* *in shock* like it was like BODAA BOOM BADA BING BADDA BANG like did not know what was happening. There was me over in a corner mouth covered with my hand because I really did not know what was going on. Like the plot twist were mini explosions of creative genius in my mind.

“All right,” I said. “We’ll agree to trust each other.” It was a lie.”

I will admit this book is flooded with some very popular and common YA tropes. Such as the “chosen one”, a tinsey little love triangle (although I personally think there is nothing to worry about here w basil boy), and some other trope like scenarios. HOWEVER I personally don't think it took away from the book. There was a couple scenes in the first 100 or so pages that had me rolling my eyes but than smiling and melting into a puddle of cheese because I was INTO ALL THE JAZZ HAPPENING HERE.

Ok so if you have not read this book yet let me give you a lil recap of what happening. Kestra is the main character, a girl with major daddy issues, and also a soft spot for guys named Simon. She’s very kickass and stubborn and WITTY (The sass levels was breaking all the charts here) (*sassy sass*). She’s basically told she has to return from the Lava Lands to see her dear old dad once again but runs into a little trouble along the way... and ends up getting kidnapped (who doesn’t love that?)

“One to Vanquish One to Rule One to Fall But All to Fool”

Enter Simon, the co narrater of this lovely book. He just happens to be involved in Kestra's kidnapping (so already were like wtf is up w simon, kidnapping = not cool) but than some wires gets crossed between Kestra and Simon (I'm not gonna elaborate because... spoilers) but they both end up being connected in universally destined ways. Together they have to navigate a crazy plan revolving around a destined dagger... and that about sums up the major premise. On to more book thoughts:

Guys this book was so much fun. Seriously the level of wit and sass and comebacks in the first 100 pages had me laughing so hard. Like the levels are snark and on point comebacks (just lets take a moment of silence here to appreciate this level of genuineness). Also the plot is very fast moving but in a way were I felt like every moment was still intriguing and good. I didn’t feel like the plot was rushed or taken away from by any means. I devoured this book in a matter of days and it is safe to say I am now questioning my life existence... like what do I do know? What is my purpose in life now that this book has come to a close? How will I know when to time my snack breaks in between chapters? My eating schedule will be forever altered?

“If this was a sample of what it would be like to work with Trina, I would soon die from prolonged exposure to idiocy.”

Also LOVE LOVED the characters!! while they weren’t the most in depth YA fantasy characters I had ever read they made you love them with their soft little hearts and comebacks and endless cuteness!! (except for trina and tengder they can go die in a whole) (*see to pit located in cell numero 4*)

“I’d always looked down on the world through diamond-studded windows. She’d looked up at the world through salt glass. Despite those differences, we were both looking in from the outside.”

The romance in this book was very cute and I was obviously routing and swooning for them at all the appropriate times. At first I wasn’t sure if I would really love it but than they pleasantly surprised me and I am now heads over heels HERE FOR IT. SHIP HAS SAILED.... CATCH ME OVER HERE SHIPPIN IT!!

“My attention had already turned to Simon. When I knelt beside him, he mumbled, “You … are frightening.” “You have no idea.”

Overall such an action packed read filled with threats of life ending marriages, constant threats against characters lives, people getting hit on the head, people making true accusations and false accusations, lieing, scheming, queue more lieing and scheming. HIGHLY recommend this to lovers of YA especially fantasy!!

So what do y'all think? Gonna give this one a read? already read it? Plz hit me up in the comments with your thoughts so we can gush!!

ARC Review || In The Unlikely Event by LJ Shen

In the Unlikely Event

by LJ Shen

Rating: 5/5 stars

Summary: Sometimes you meet people who are out of this world, so you make them a part of yours.

A one-night stand born from vengeance in a foreign land.
An explosive chemistry neither of us could deny.
We signed a contract on the back of a Boar’s Head Pub napkin that said if we ever met again, we would drop everything and be together.
Eight years and thousands of miles later, he’s here.
In New York.
And he’s America’s music obsession.
The intangible Irish poet who brings record executives to their knees.
The blizzard in my perfect, unshaken snow globe.
Last time we spoke, he was a beggar with no intention of becoming a king.
But a king he became, and now I’m his servant.
I’m not the same broken princess Malachy Doherty put back together with his callused hands.
I have a career I love.
A boyfriend I adore.
An apartment, a roommate, a life.
I changed. He changed, too.
But Mal kept the napkin.
Question is, will I keep my word?

My review:

LJ Shen has done it again! This book was heart wrenching and heartbreaking... and yet still stood on its own compared to other LJ Shen’s books!

The shocking events made my heart burn and ache but this book still had all the qualities I love about LJ Shen’s writing. Love interests I am DEEPLY invested in, angst, heart shattering events and plot twists. Almost to the point where they step tooo much over the line and yet I route for them endlessly.

The sexual tension was there. The premise of when they met all those years ago. The cute moment where they met again after all that time... love!!

Since this was a contemporary it was nice reading a different storyline (even though I absolutely adore Vicious and Pretty Reckless) this one just continues to show how I cant not love anything from this author! Her stories just take over your mind with a love that attacks all of your senses in an all consuming way!! A must read for romance lovers and readers alike!

So what do you all think? Willing to give this a read? Please do! Especially if you have not read LJ Shen before than I highly recommend!

SUMMARY:

Princes have pomp and glory—not murdered secretaries and crushes on commoners
Nothing gets London's high society's tongues wagging like a good scandal. And when the personal secretary of the visiting Prince Sebastian of Alucia is found murdered, it's all anyone can talk about, including Eliza Tricklebank. Her unapologetic gossip gazette has benefitted from an anonymous tip about the crime, prompting Sebastian to take an interest in playing detective—and an even greater one in Eliza.
With a trade deal on the line and mounting pressure to secure a noble bride, there's nothing more salacious than a prince dallying with a commoner. Sebastian finds Eliza's contrary manner as frustrating as it is seductive, but they'll have to work together if they're going to catch the culprit. And when things heat up behind closed doors, it's the prince who'll have to decide what comes first—his country or his heart.
My Review:
**Thanks so much Harlequin and Netgalley for an advanced copy of this book! All thoughts and opinions are my own!**

The Princess Plan was a very enjoyable light read. Characters that are easily lovable in their light heartedness regardless of their predictability. This is the type of book you sandwich in between two really heavy INTENSE fantasy books because you just need some mush without having to worry about your characters life hanging in the balance every two seconds (THE AGONY)!

This was my first historical romance read and overall I liked it!!

I thought the plot was very fun. Loved the masquerades. The carriage rides. The gloved hand kisses. The mystery prince. These are all tropes I find myself very very familiar with and I loved them in this book with the kind of ease one loves a good hot coffee in the morning.

Cant say theres anything really that shocking in this one. The plot was quite unsurprising in that regard however that for me was part of its charm. A classic little poor, society shamed girl, catches the eye of the ever so unattainable foreign prince... DAMNN I’m done for. Recommend this book to lovers of romance and happy endings alike!

Are You Ready For Sweater Weather? The Autumn Tag

Fall season is upon us... and you know what that means... *tea kettle hisses* *spoons stirring* cozy fireplace reading preferably accompanied by a steaming cup of hot coco (or tea whatever your jam is)....and I thought I’d celebrate this cozy leaf filled season by doing a tag!

This lovely tag can be found over at Jenna @Bookmarkyourthoughts  Her blog is very cute and so much fun so I recommend stopping by :)

Hot chocolate: what is your comfort book?

  • Bloodlines series or The Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead: I know these are both series featuring vampires and all... but there strangely comforting in a way? Maybe because they have such lovable characters and the plot line is fast and addicting, plus there is a ton of books in each series so its perfect to binge read in the fall season!! (Honorable mention: Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles)

Pumpkin carving: What is your favorite creative outlet?

  • Blogging, sketching, and painting are probably my top three. I also enjoy collaging with magazine photos as well as cooking.

Falling Leaves: Changes that appear bad but that you secretly love?

  • Life: The start of a new year, or school year. This time always seems rather intimidating but I kind of find myself thriving with that kind of change?? The meeting new people, the new surroundings/classrooms, just the newness of it all can be very inspiring.
  • Books: When we all secretly fall in love with the villain in the story.... instead of the one where “supposed” to like (I admit I am guilty of favoring the villain in many book situations I feel like they are just much more boundary less characters who tend to intrigue and surprise more??)

Pumpkin Spiced Latte: Something you love that others tend to judge

  • Life: My love of literally every genre of music. Like seriously my playlists can be so random... like opera mets Disney mets 80s rock. Some people don't understand (especially the opera haha). Also sometimes people judge my bookworm side?!? (Like you read for fun?? Like yeah... I do and it is AMAZING and y'all should get on track and try it)They just don't get it
  • Books: Ok so I’m a bit of softhearted chica when it comes to when a brig brooding/angsty guy meets a soft/sweet/heartwarming girl and than they find a connection with each other and ahhh.. Also don't kill me but love triangles?? but only on rare rare occasions when they are done right and we all know they end up with the fav ;)

Bonfire Night: What makes you explode with joy?

  •  Singing (especially in the car with the music blaring), Reading, music, designing, talking about my passions, driving in the car with no destination, being a beach bum, chai lattes.

Friday Night: Favorite Scary film or book?

  • Not a huge fan of the scary.... but if I had to choose it would for sure have to be on the more phycological side of fear (I just cannot do gory), like The Silence of The Lambs for film and I don’t think I’ve ever read a truly “scary/horror” book.

Halloween Candy: Favorite thing to eat?

  • Fall food: Hot chocolate, spiced chai, apple cider, soup with a grilled cheese, sweet potatoes
  • All time Fav Food: Tacos, fish or chicken tacos really anything taco

Scarves: Your autumn ‘must’ have accessory?

  • Combat boots or a good cozy cardigan are some of my fall go to’s. I also really like a good pair of flare jeans or leggings!

Fire: A book or film that burns your soul?

  • Book: A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas (I just strongly connected to this book at the time I read it and it will forever belong in my heart), The Art of Breaking Things by Laura Sibson (raw, emotional, and very addicting my heart was fully invested in this one)
  • Film: Baby Driver, The Book Thief, Good Will Hunting, 10 Things I Hate About You (I could go on.. hahaha)

Toffee Apples: A book or film that seems like one thing but really has a different inside

  • Book: Hold Me Like A Breath by Tiffany Schmidit, this one appears like a quiet love story but in turn was very intense in a very unique way, gripping but also heartbreaking, and a total mind trip at the same time.

I tag the following fellow bloggers ;)
(No pressure of course! Just for fun!)

So what are you guys reading this fall? Any fall themed traditions? Feel free to lmk in the comments below! The tag is also free for anyone else to snatch up if they please!!

--

EXCERPT:
I’m four days shy of my eighteenth birthday, sandwiched between two Olympic gold medalists, and preparing to race for a spot in the 2016 Summer Olympics for the 400-meter event.
How did I even make it to the finals?
Hot bile floods my throat. As sweat drips from my brow, I hear a crazy woman shouting over the crowd.
“Breathe, baby! Breathe!”
Peeking over at the gate to the right of me, our eyes connect. I realize she’s my crazy woman. With her huge smile and eyes blazing with pride, my mom always brings me comfort. My gaze slides from her encouraging face and lands on that of my boyfriend. Patrick’s crooked smile has been the same since we were kids.
Just the sight of them, here by my side, reassures me. I gulp in a deep, cleansing breath and bow my head. This silences the deafening noise, and it helps me to forget my shortcomings.
“On your marks!” a stern voice—the voice I’ve been listening for—bellows over the loudspeaker.
I step in front of my tightly spaced starting blocks, jumping one last time into the air to activate my muscles. Then I crawl backwards into the blocks, my left foot positioned in the back. As I slide my feet in, a smirk creeps across my lips. I picture Coach Schwarz in the stands, scolding me like he does before every race.
“Morgan, switch your damn feet, and space out your blocks more!”
My left knee digs into the rubbery Tartan Track. I focus on the connection of my damp skin against the hot track below. I say a silent prayer, thanking it for supporting my feet and body race after race.
Then, one last breath. I position my fingers behind the white line and await my next command.
“Set!” booms the Starter’s robotic voice over the loudspeaker.
My hips shoot straight up. Fire replaces my blood, surging through my veins.
BANG!
The starting gun reverberates through me.
I push out of the blocks, careful not to go out too hard in the first 200 meters. Keeping my eyes glued straight ahead, I don’t allow my opponents to bait me. Instead, I wait for my time. I stick close to the pack until I see my sweet spot ahead.
“Kick. Kick. Kick.” The words play like a mantra in my head as I round the second curve of the track. My body is weightless. My brain needs no prompting as it propels my legs forward. My feet become lighter, and my spikes barely touch the track before shooting forward for my next stride.
My arms pump harder as I enter my part of the race. The part in which I shine, the part I relish. The finish line is just ahead. Movement on my right enters my peripheral vision. I feel Sammy closing in. She’s right on my tail.

Author Bio:
Ashlynn Cubbison is a goal-oriented, driven woman, who owns and operates four companies with her husband. They have two beautiful sons together, and although her life is chaotic, fun, full of love and never the same each day, somehow she finds room for writing as well.
Growing up Ashlynn struggled with reading. Then, in her sophomore year of high school, a small seed was planted. After acing a literary test, her teacher looked her square in the eye and said “you’ve been selling yourself short all year. I wonder what you could achieve with some effort.” After delving deeper into books, she discovered Pride and Prejudice, and has been an obsessive reader ever since.
Eventually her love of books translated into writing. She hopes to inspire others, especially children, to find their passion as she did.

Blog Tour || Relic by Bronwyn Eley (Another great YA Fantasy to add to your TBR!)

Title: Relic
Author: Bronwyn Eley
Publisher: Talem Press
Publication date: 12 September 2019
Genres: Young Adult, Fantasy

Synopsis:

In the city of Edriast, there is no deadlier duty than to serve as the Shadow.

As the personal servant of the powerful Lord Rennard, the Shadow's life is all but forfeit. Rennard possesses one of five rare and dangerous Relics – a jewel that protects his bloodline, but slowly poisons everyone else in its proximity. When the current Shadow succumbs to its magic, nineteen-year-old blacksmith Kaylan is summoned to take his place.

It's an appointment that will kill her.

As the time Kaylan has left ebbs away, hope begins to fade... That is, until she discovers a plot to destroy all five bloodlines in possession of the Relics.

A rebel force plans to put an end to Rennard's rule and Kaylan suddenly finds herself embroiled in a cause that might just be worth fighting for. But no cause is without its costs…

As her life hangs in the balance and rebellion bears down on Edriast, Kaylan must decide where her loyalties lie – and how she'll leave her mark on the world.

Relic is the absorbing first novel in The Relic Trilogy, a thrillingly dark YA fantasy series.

My Review:

As most you know YA fantasy is one of my favorite genres to read!! So when I picked up Relic I was really hoping it would be another one to add to my lists of favorites for the year...

and thankfully Relic did not disappoint! You guys this book is the action packed, fantasy whirl wind ride we all need right now. In addition to the powerful kickass protagonist, Kaylan balances betrayals, friendships (that maaay be a little more than a friendship if you catch my drift ;) all while trying to stay alive.

This book has a very interesting premise revolving around ones shadow, and how that shadow is the personal assistant to the lord Rennard. The shadows life is essentially cut short due to be closely connected to the king who uses the shadows life force as an aid to himself. Kaylan has been chosen as the next shadow and omg y'all this book is just very unique and engaging and I am FEELING the YA fantasy releases of 2019!!

Only thing that kept this from being a five star read was that I felt the pacing was not a hundred percent on the money at points and that the plot line dragged a tad at moments. However I still really enjoyed this read!

Highly recommend to fans of YA fantasy who are looking to get immersed in yet another mystical, dramatic, action packed tale of whimsy!!

Rating: 4/5 stars
